An ode to office toilet breaks 😄— 4 reasons why I love them & you should too

What I do during my toilet breaks is one of the two reasons I love going to office. The hefty paycheck is the second!

The toilet breaks and myself — we have been together since eternity. Safe to say that our relationship has stood the test of time! Primary school, college, internships, corporates — we have seen it all together.

There has always been some magic in the toilet breaks. During college exams, students would go for a toilet break with questions and come back with all the answers. I wonder what is hidden there! And I have been following the same modus operandi even during my corporate life.

Whenever I am stuck at something, I take a slow walk to the toilet in the farthest corner of the office, choose the corner toilet compartment, shut the door, cover the seat and sit on it. To those who have not tried this, there is more comfort here than any other ergonomic chair in the office. And then I do what I do best — I let my thoughts go wild, and totally come up with all the answers in no time!

Here are a few things I do during my office breaks, and you should totally try them all!

I. All the things that are important to us happen in that small compartment.

We stalk Instagram, recent gossips from Hollywood, reviews of upcoming movies, and everything else except our office matters. And please don’t tell me that you have never checked your Medium comments during a toilet break, I am so not going to believe you.

II. Sometimes I doze off, and it is purely to improve my productivity!

You have just had your lunch break and head straight to your desk. You have tried the strongest black coffee, and yet it is not helping. Guess what, you head to your favorite toilet spot, doze off and in 20 minutes — come back refreshed to shine again!

Remember when you are sleeping in a designated nap pad, your manager knows! But when you are in a toilet, nobody knows 😃!

III. Toilet breaks offer a moment of peace.

The primary reason why toilet breaks stand out because within an overcrowded space, this is your moment of peace. It is a momentary escape from all things we don’t like. Here you can WhatsApp with your friends, watch a YouTube video, a Spotify podcast, or the latest article from The Silent Monk! — all of them are total stress busters.

And nobody is going to ask you what took you so long in the toilet. It still makes people uncomfortable to talk about digestive issues.

IV. The best ideas come from the toilet breaks.

Be it an office matter or anything else, you will always get your best ideas in this moment of peace.

Hence, I am totally requesting HR to issue a mandate that every employee needs to spend least half hour in the office toilets for all the productivity reasons. All the toilets shall have nice soothing aroma, and seats shall be more comfortably designed.

As per the latest reviews on Glassdoor, all the sought after employees are choosing their next employer based upon the hygiene and design of the office toilets!

If you are convinced about this amazing productivity hack and would like to embrace it, here are 3 tips to maximize the benefit:

  • Never go to the toilet where your manager goes. You would not want to face him when getting out of the compartment 😃.
  • And when you are coming out of the toilet, make sure you flush your toilet seat — even if you have done nothing! You want to avoid the disgusting judgmental look when you bump into someone outside the toilet compartment.
  • Always keep your phone on silent, and use a headphone for all the good motivational videos you are going to watch.

As I continue to ruminate during my toilet break, it is time that I need to get back to office! Anyways, I have already gotten an idea of what I am going to write today. No wonder I like the toilet cubicle so much 😊!
